Buffalo Bills named by ESPN as best fit for former first round draft selection who's still available in NFL free agency
Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

The Buffalo Bills were named by ESPN this week as the best fit for a former first round draft selection who is still available in NFL free agency.

ESPN thinks the Bills would be a great fit for running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

Edwards-Helaire, a first round draft pick by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2020 NFL Draft, is a free agent after spending the first four years of his career in KC.

The former LSU Tigers standout saw his role decrease during his time with the Chiefs, due in part to various injuries. This past season, Edwards-Helaire played in 15 games for Kansas City, but he totaled just 223 rushing yards and 188 receiving yards while playing behind Isiah Pacheco.

Edwards-Helaire makes sense for the Bills because he played at LSU in 2019 under passing game coordinator Joe Brady, who is now Buffalo's offensive coordinator.

From ESPN: Edwards-Helaire's best college season came with Joe Brady as the offensive coordinator, and the former LSU assistant is now the offensive coordinator with the Bills. James Cook is the unquestioned lead back in Buffalo, but Edwards-Helaire could figure in a competition with Ty Johnson for reserve work.

Edwards-Helaire rushed for 1,415 yards and 16 touchdowns while catching 55 passes for 453 yards and a touchdown while playing under Brady at LSU in 2019.

The soon-to-be 25 year old running back isn't the type of player that's going to be a featured NFL running back -- mostly because of injury concerns -- but he's an ideal running back to serve in a complementary role.

Signing Edwards-Helaire, which shouldn't be expensive, would give the Bills some added running back depth. And he'd fit seamlessly into Buffalo's offense thanks to his prior connection with Brady.
