Bucs WR David Moore Garners Praise From Dave Canales
Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

A former Seahawks wide receiver is gaining some praise from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers coaching staff. When asked about veteran wide receiver David Moore and how he has looked throughout training camp practices so far, Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales was full of praise for the player he used to coach on the West Coast.

“Just his contact balance,” Canales said of Moore, who is solidly built at 6-foot, 220 pounds. “Anytime someone is leaning on him, balls in the air, he really doesn’t get affected cause he’s so strong. He’s special with the ball so a lot of perimeter screens and jet sweep type of things on the perimeter, he can really make yards in different ways as well.”

David Moore’s Best Shot Is With Dave Canales And The Bucs

Entering his seventh year in the NFL at the age of 28 years old, David Moore is a player that has experience working with Dave Canales in the past due to their time with the Seattle Seahawks. Moore played from 2017 to 202o while Canales was a part of the coaching staff.

He is the most veteran receiver in the back half of the depth chart for the Bucs and has really been able to build some momentum for himself since joining the team. He started by signing a rookie mini-camp tryout contract with the Bucs at the start of the offseason workouts which then turned into a full-time deal. After this, Moore has been able to make plays and show flashes in practices during mandatory mini-camp, OTAs, and now Bucs training camp.

After four years in Seattle (2017-2020), Moore has bounced around to a few teams including Denver, Green Bay and most recently last year with Chicago, but he hasn’t gotten playing time in recent years due to injuries and being buried on team’s depth charts.

However, his best playing years when he was healthy came on the Seahawks with Canales and the rest of the Seattle coaching staff where he posted 78 receptions, 1163 receiving yards, and 13 receiving TDs with the team in three seasons and 14 games. During that time Moore was a part of a very underrated wide receiver group and was able to flash with some moments of good play when he would get chances to see the field in Seattle.

Bucs Have Great Competition At WR

Now, David Moore finds himself battling for a roster spot with the Buccaneers against young wide receivers like Trey Palmer, Deven Thompkins, Rakim Jarrett, Kade Warner, Kaylon Geiger, Ryan Miller and Taye Barber for the last couple of roster spots on the Bucs depth  chart in the regular season. While the young receivers have been able to make some good plays and push for their positions on the depth chart, familiarity with the current offensive coaching staff certainly does have it’s benefits as Moore knows what to expect out of the offense.

Besides that, he has been able to showcase some very good ability throughout training camp by making big bodied catches against a variety of corners and safeties. He’s also showcased good route running ability throughout the first week of training camp, hauling in two touchdowns on the third day of practice.

It will be very interesting to see if Moore can continue to build on the early momentum that he has created for himself, and whether or not he will be able to carve a spot on the Bucs’ initial 53 man-roster at the end of the preseason given the stiff competition that the Bucs have in their receiver room. David Moore has certainly showcased the ability, and is now getting noticed by the media as well as the Bucs coaching staff.
