Bucs Lose 3 Defensive Starters In Loss To 49ers
Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

Not only did the Bucs lose to the 49ers, 27-14, on Sunday, but they also lost three defensive starters to injuries in San Francisco.

Cornerbacks Carlton Davis III and Jamel Dean and inside linebacker Lavonte David all exited the game in the third quarter. Davis suffered a hip injury, while Dean appeared to have suffered a foot/ankle injury. David suffered a groin injury.

Bucs head coach Todd Bowles said that the team did not have any update after the game, and indicated that he won’t know more until the players are evaluated back in Tampa.

“Nothing at this point,” Bucs head coach Todd Bowles said. “They’re getting evaluated right now, so we’ll find out more later on.”

Bucs left tackle Tristan Wirfs also missed a few plays in the fourth quarter due to a leg injury, but returned to action at the end of the game. Wirfs has been dealing with a deep thigh bruise for several weeks and playing through the pain.

Bucs Rookies See Extended Time On Defense As Injury Replacements

Tampa Bay cornerback Jamel Dean was the first to exit the game in the third quarter. Dean got injured just four minutes after halftime as he mistimed his jump on 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk’s 76-yard touchdown catch-and-run. Dean was seen being carted to the locker room with his shoe off and his foot wrapped in what looked to be an ice wrap.

Zyon McCollum replaced Dean, who missed most of the Texans game with a concussion just three weeks ago.

Cornerback Carlton Davis III injured his hip in the third quarter and was replaced by rookie Josh Hayes, who saw his first NFL snaps on defense on Sunday.

Hayes has been a special teams star during his rookie season as a gunner, and made the game’s first tackle on the opening kickoff. The sixth-round pick out of Kansas State recorded three tackles on defense after missing the Titans game due to a concussion.

Rookie inside linebacker SirVocea Dennis replaced Lavonte David after he went out with a groin injury. Dennis, a fifth-round pick out of Pittsburgh, has mainly seen action on special teams and has played sparingly on defense. The rookie showed good effort in his first extended action on defense.

Although he dove and missed a couple of tackles, Dennis wound up with two stops on defense. By comparison, Devin White played the whole game and only had three tackles.

Bucs head coach Todd Bowles is scheduled to meet with the media on Monday at 2:30 p.m. ET and could have an update on these injured players. Stay tuned to Pewter Report for more Bucs injury news.
