Bucs Injury Update: Will Banged Up Starters Play In Indy?
Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

To add injury to insult, the Bucs suffered a number of injuries to many of their most important players on the team in Sunday’s 27-14 loss at San Francisco. The Bucs lost inside linebacker Lavonte David (groin) and corners Jamel Dean (ankle) and Carlton Davis III (hip) all in the third quarter.

Meanwhile star left tackle Tristan Wirfs missed a couple of snaps after a player fell onto the back of his leg in the fourth quarter. Thankfully Wirfs was able to return.

Bucs head coach Todd Bowles said everyone was still being evaluated on Sunday after the game. On Monday, Bowles gave us more of the same, starting off with those on defense.

Bucs Injury Update

“They’re pretty sore right now,” Bucs head coach Todd Bowles said. “They’re still getting tests run. We’ll have an answer as soon as the tests come back.”

He also confirmed that all three players are getting an MRI.

What we did find out is that Jamel Dean got hurt on two different plays, with the touchdown to Brand Aiyuk being the second. Bowles also specified what specifically is bothering him.

“There were two different things,” Bowles said. “He got hurt on the long touchdown pass. It’s an ankle.”

It’s been a tough go of it this season for Dean and Carlton Davis III, who have both missed multiple games this season and have not recorded an interception, either. Dean has missed one game while Davis has missed three. Given their injury history, it would be surprising if both were able to go this Sunday.

What fans of the Bucs should be most worried about, though, is the possibility that David could miss time. We don’t know the results yet, but keep in a mind that defensive tackles Vita Vea and Logan Hall both missed a game this season because of a groin injury. David, the team’s leading tackler, is 33 years old and will probably need more time to recover than the 28-year old Vea or the 23-year old Hall.

The Bucs can’t afford to be without David for long. His running mate Devin White has struggled this year and had a poor showing in Sunday’s game with just three tackles.

What About Tristan Wirfs?

Bucs head coach Todd Bowles also addressed the status of left tackle Tristan Wirfs. It sounds like he’ll have the next couple of days off before hopefully returning by the end of the week.

“He’s pretty sore, but it’s Monday,” Bowles said. “We’ll give it a chance until the end of the week. Tristan is a pretty tough guy. “He’s dealing with a leg (injury).”
