Bucs Elevate 2 Ahead Of Steelers Matchup
Mykal McEldowney/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK

With injuries plaguing the Bucs defensive backfield, the team has elevated safety Nolan Turner and cornerback Anthony Chesley ahead of their Week 6 tilt against the Steelers. Starting safety Mike Edwards is questionable and is a game-time decision as he deals with an elbow injury. While safety Logan Ryan (foot) and cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting (quad) have already been ruled out. Those injuries could pave the way for playing time for the two on Sunday.

This will be the first elevation for Chesley, who has seen action in 12 career games split between the Texans and Colts. He was signed to the Bucs practice squad on September 1 after being waived by Indianapolis during final roster cuts.

Chesley has recorded seven tackles in the NFL with one fumble recovery. In nine games last season with the Colts he logged 96 snaps on special teams.

Turner’s Time To Shine

While it marks the first elevation for both players, for Turner it could be his first game dressing as a pro. Signing with the Bucs as an undrafted free agent, Turner stood out almost immediately. A versatile player in the secondary, he has lined up at both safety spots and will most likely figure to have a large role on special teams.

During the preseason Turner started two games for the Bucs, finishing with six tackles on defense, adding three more on special teams. A cutdown casualty, he was re-signed to the team’s practice squad after clearing waivers.

Turner has stayed ready for this moment, and is excited for his first opportunity to play in an NFL game.

“It would be really cool,” Turner said. “To get a shot at playing in a real NFL game would mean a lot. It would be a really cool opportunity and I’d be ready for the opportunity.”

As for how Turner has been staying ready for this opportunity, mental reps have been key.

“Mental reps,” Turner said. “Paying attention and trying to get all the reps even though I’m not getting the reps. Just mental reps and paying attention. Getting down the details of the game plan so I can stay up to speed and everything, and not fall behind in preparation.”

Turner has been leaning on the other defensive backs for any advice and anything he can add to his understanding of the game. If he is indeed active, he’ll take that with him into Sunday’s game.

“They’ve been a huge help,” Turner said. ” Just getting to sit in the same meeting rooms and ask questions and hear what their train of thought is on different schemes and how we run our scheme is really everything. Just hearing how those guys think and kind of transition the way I think to some of the vets.”

Tuner will most likely see a majority of his snaps on special teams if elevated and with two of four safeties potentially down, there’s a good chance he’ll have an opportunity to dress for his first NFL game. It’s an opportunity he doesn’t plan to waste.
