Bills' former friend looking into stealing away key member of the team

The pages turn quickly in the world of the NFL and the Buffalo Bills are re-learning that following a heartbreaking playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Less than 48 hours after Tyler Bass' field goal attempt sailed right, the coaching carousel is hitting up in Buffalo. This time it involves a valued member of head coach Sean McDermott's staff.

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the New York Giants have requested an interview with Bills linebacker coach Bobby Babich for their defensive coordinator position.

It's no secret the Giants are led by HC Brian Daboll, the Bills' former offensive coordinator. He's worked with Babich so considering the circumstances, his interest could be perceived as serious.

Daboll is seeking to replace Wink Martindale, who quit on the team earlier in the offseason after the Giants fired multiple members of the defensive staff.

This puts the Bills in an intriguing situation: It's clear that Babich's work has paid off in a big way. Following Matt Milano's season-ending injury, it seemed like the linebacker core would struggle the rest of the way but Babich kept the ship afloat as Tyrel Dodson continued to rise alongside Terrel Bernard. In the playoffs, Babich even had postseason hero A.J. Klein play solid football.

Letting him go could also be a blow to player morale as linebackers are known to love the Bills LB coach. The good news is that McDermott can easily promote Babich to defensive coordinator given that he's carried the title since Leslie Frazier's resignation last offseason.

What that means for responsibilities can be addressed later but for now, the Bills need to focus on keeping Babich in the building. Someone tell GM Brandon Beane that it's time for an in-house promotion.

Babich has been a fast riser in Buffalo as he joined the Bills in 2017 as an assistant defensive backs coach and moved on to coaching safeties in 2018 before being promoted to linebackers coach in 2022.
