Big-play wide receiver floated by NFL insider as potential target for Bears
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Bears could certainly use another wide receiver to put alongside of D.J. Moore, especially after Darnell Mooney did not exactly work out for the club.

Mooney is set to be a free agent this offseason anyway, and the chances of the Bears re-signing him are slim to none. Based on his production in Chicago the last two years, retaining him wouldn’t make much sense.

That’s why Kevin Patra of NFL.com feels that the Bears should pursue Buffalo Bills wide out Gabe Davis in free agency next month.

Davis played in every game this season, catching 45 passes for 746 yards and seven touchdowns.

The 24-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Central Florida, was selected by the Bills in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

He appeared in every contest during his rookie campaign, registering 35 catches for 599 yards and seven scores. He posted nearly identical numbers in his second season, snaring 35 balls for 549 yards while reaching the end zone six times.

Then, in 2022, Davis had a breakout year of sorts, hauling in 48 receptions for 836 yards and seven touchdowns. He averaged an impressive 17.4 yards per catch, demonstrating his big-play ability.

Davis isn’t exactly consistent, as he had five games without registering a catch this season. However, he also has electrifying moments, like in Week 16 when he logged four catches for 130 yards and a touchdown in Buffalo’s pivotal win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Sanford, Fl. native would certainly comprise a rather impressive receiving tandem with Moore, much like he has done with Stefon Diggs throughout his time with the Bills.

Due to financial constraints, Buffalo will probably not be re-signing Davis this offseason, leaving the door open for the Bears to swoop in and bring him aboard.

Chicago went 7-10 in 2023.
