Bears' Matt Eberflus discusses job safety amid skid, rumors

Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus suggested Wednesday he hasn't lost the backing of higher-ups within the organization amid a 14-game losing streak his 0-4 Bears will look to end at the 2-2 Washington Commanders on Thursday night. 

"I feel the support," Eberflus told reporters regarding his job, per Courtney Cronin of ESPN. "I haven't talked to anybody about any of those things. I feel the support and we're just focused on Washington."

Eberflus officially accepted the Chicago job in January 2022 and began his first season in charge at 3-4. The Bears haven't won since and endured a tumultuous opening month of the current campaign. That includes defensive coordinator Alan Williams suddenly resigning amid bizarre rumors, quarterback Justin Fields seemingly calling coaches out and wide receiver Chase Claypool being exiled likely for good. 

As shared by Ryan Taylor of NBC Sports Chicago, NBC Sports NFL insider Peter King recently said during an appearance on local sports radio station 670 The Score that he "would not be surprised" to see the Bears move on from Eberflus if they suffer "a bad loss" at FedExField on Thursday evening. Whoever is serving as Chicago's head coach will spend next week preparing the club to face the Minnesota Vikings at Soldier Field on Oct. 15. 

1-3 Minnesota hosts the 3-1 Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday afternoon. 

"I've been doing this 32 years, so I understand the business, but I understand that to do it right you got to focus on your job, and you got to focus on right here, right now," Eberflus added during his comments. "So, you can think about a lot of different things that's going to do nobody good. You can focus on your job and where your feet are right now. Our sole focus is on Washington."

As of Tuesday morning, the ESPN Football Power Index gave the Bears a 26.1% chance to "earn" the rights for the top pick in next year's draft that could be used to acquire star quarterback Caleb Williams of the USC Trojans. Eberflus may have no say in how the Bears use such an asset, as he could find himself unemployed before the first full weekend of October.
