Baker Mayfield thanks Browns fans in statement addressing uncertain future

Baker Mayfield didn't say goodbye to Cleveland Browns fans in a statement posted on social media, but he seemed to come close.

"This is not a message with hidden meaning," Mayfield wrote, in part. "This is strictly to thank the city of Cleveland for embracing my family and me. We have made many memories and shared growing in this process through all the ups and downs. I have no clue what happens next, which is the meaning behind the silence I have had during the duration of this process. I can only control what I can, which is trusting in God's plan throughout this process.

"I have given this franchise everything I have. That is something I've always done at every stage, and at every level. And that will not change wherever I take my next snap."

Mayfield's statement comes after reports surfaced that the Browns have already made a trade offer for Deshaun Watson and met with the Houston Texans quarterback Tuesday.

Mayfield, 26, was the top pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and had a career best year in 2020 with 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Last year, he struggled through a shoulder injury that eventually required postseason surgery and finished the season with a career-low 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
