Adam Schefter responds to wild claim about Eagles' collapse

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter seemingly isn't buying what FS1 and WFAN personality Craig Carton recently said about the collapse of the 2023 Philadelphia Eagles.

"I texted somebody at the organization yesterday and said, 'What is this?' And the text back, the quote was, 'none of that S-word happened,'" Schefter said about the situation during an appearance on Philadelphia sports radio station 97.5 The Fanatic, per the Crossing Broad website.

According to Cayden Steele of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com, Carton claimed during Tuesday's edition of his FS1 program that he has inside information about the 2023 Eagles side that went from 10-1 to 11-6 before the club fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

"It is a problem that would splinter any group of men," Carton said at that time. "Any group of men. It is a real significant problem, and it cannot be fixed. I will tell you that. I’m not gonna say anything more than that. It will be very interesting to see if a high-profile player is no longer with the Eagles going into this season."

Eagles punt returner Britain Covey raised eyebrows earlier this month when he suggested there was "some pointing fingers from player to player" amid the club's swoon that included losing six of its last seven games (including the playoffs). Whispers about quarterback Jalen Hurts lacking certain leadership qualities have also hovered over the organization throughout the winter.

"Was somebody with another player’s woman or – who knows? Who knows? I’m just telling you that somebody in the organization was pretty adamant that none of that happened," Schefter continued during the radio segment. "Look, I think people are looking for a reason that their season went south. And I just think they got blown out at home by the (San Francisco 49ers in Week 13 on Dec. 3), the season unraveled, they never got it back together. It was injuries, it was chemistry, it was confidence. It was momentum. It was all those things. Was somebody sleeping with someone else’s woman? Maybe? I don’t know."

Whatever did or didn't happen within the Eagles across the final few months of the 2023 campaign, it could be fascinating to follow who is still associated with the organization by the time training camp sessions open this summer. For what it's worth, it's believed the Eagles could pursue none other than living legend Bill Belichick next January if current head coach Nick Sirianni doesn't right the ship later this year.
