Adam Gase: 'Whoever's got a pulse right now' will start at receiver for Jets

It's hard to imagine a season starting much worse than the 2020 New York Jets. They have been blown out in their first two games, showing little signs of life on either side of the ball. To make matters worse, the injury bug has been feasting on their receiving corps, as all three starting receivers potentially missing Sunday's game against the Colts due to injuries.

When asked about who will play receiver for the team, Gase offered a grim diagnosis, stating that "whoever's got a pulse right now, we're ready to go."

It may sound hyperbolic but it is really getting that dismal for the Jets. Jamison Crowder, the team's best receiver by a wide margin, is doubtful to play due to a hamstring injury, while Brashad Perriman missed practice due to his ankle and Chris Hogan was limited as he deals with a rib injury.

After those three, Braxton Berrios and Josh Malone are the only receivers currently left on the roster. In seven seasons, the two have combined for less than 300 yards and two touchdowns.

This is awful news for Sam Darnold, who has struggled to find any sort of rhythm on the field in his third season in the league. While Darnold has managed to complete 60% of his passes and thrown just one interception, he has not thrown for more than 215 yards in either game this season. Without any reliable receivers, it's unlikely that Darnold will be able to turn his season around against Indianapolis.
