Aaron Rodgers says he can win another MVP, but maybe not with Packers

The future is still very much up in the air for Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

However, the 39-year-old made it clear on Tuesday during his appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” that if he doesn’t return for a 19th season in 2023, it won’t be because he can’t still compete at the highest level.

“Do I still think I can play? Of course,” Rodgers said. “Can I play at a high level? Yeah. The highest. I think I can win MVP again in the right situation. Right situation, is that Green Bay or somewhere else? I’m not sure. But I don’t think you should shut down any opportunity.”

Although Rodgers is just one season removed from back-to-back MVP seasons in 2020 and 2021, he had a tumultuous 2022.

His 3,695 yards passing was his lowest single-season total of any season in which he played 15 or more games. His 12 interceptions were the second-most he’s thrown in a single season, his 91.1 passer rating was the lowest of his career and his 10.6 yards per completion his lowest since becoming Green Bay’s starter in 2008.

Despite everything, Rodgers still finished seventh in the NFL in touchdown passes and 11th in passing yards. Many of his shortcomings can be rationalized after one look at his supporting cast.

Although Allen Lazard had a solid season as Green Bay’s de facto No. 1 wideout (100 targets, 60 receptions, 788 yards, six touchdowns), it’s clear the gap between himself and Adams was a big one. Lazard has hinted he won’t be returning to the Packers next season.

There’s still hope 2022 second-round pick Christian Watson can blossom into the bona fide No. 1 WR Rodgers clearly missed this year. He showed promise during his rookie season, totaling 66 targets, 41 receptions, 611 yards and seven touchdowns.

If the Packers can add another pass-catching weapon through the draft, free agency or a trade, and they shore up the offensive line, it’s not absurd to think Rodgers could find his MVP form again.
