49ers release DL Taco Charlton with injury settlement
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers have begun their 90-man cutdown ahead of Tuesday's deadline to get to 53 players, announcing a release of Taco Charlton with an injury settlement after placing him on Injured Reserve earlier this preseason.

With the IR designation, Charlton didn't count toward the 90-man roster anyways, as the 49ers essentially announced his season was over by placing him on the list before the year.

Charlton, a standout at times during training camp, could've been a potential practice squad player, but an undisclosed injury and the Injured Reserve move took out any chances of that occurring.

Now, the 49ers' focus goes toward the 53-man roster, as they'll need to cut 37 players before assembling their 17-man practice squad.

Of course, roster politics will be on display, as the 49ers will likely place a couple of players on Injured Reserve after adding them to the 53-man roster, allowing for certain cut candidates to make the roster after the initial cutdown date.

The 49ers have several candidates to make the 53-man roster at defensive line, although the room is arguably weaker depth-wise compared to recent years, meaning the team may not carry as many players at the position as they've done in the past.
