The heart of the Indianapolis Colts special team unit, Punter Rigoberto Sanchez, suffered a possible ACL or Achilles’ tendon at the end of the Tuesday’s training camp practice. The team is awaiting the results of an MRI at the time of writing, but the season looks like a scratch for Sanchez. Thoughts for a speedy recovery, the Colts need him back. In the mean time there are capable punters on the waivers.

3 Potential Replacement Punters for the Indianapolis Colts

Matt Haack

Matt Haack was waived by the Buffalo Bills ahead of the 80 man roster cuts. Haack was surpassed by the “Punt God”. Haack still has some juice in his leg, just not as much as that guy.

Matt Haack can both punt and kickoff for the special teams unit. Punting is his specialty and that is where we’ll focus. Haack has successfully executed 357 punts, while only having two blocked in his five-year carrier. His carrier average yards per punt sits at a solid 44.4.

Haack will be able to get the job done. A big bonus is his health, as always this is something that I dread mentioning. Ditching superstition, Haack has played in every game of his carrier, that’s 83 games including the playoffs.

If the Colts can pick him up from the waivers he will be the bandage to stop the bleeding of the Sanchez wound.

Joseph Charlton

Charlton had an amazing season full of highlights in Carolina as an undrafted free agent, following the 2020 NFL draft. He won the preseason punting battle in Carolina, displacing Kaare Vedvik.

His NFL debut was simple but very effective. Charlton punted the ball twice, with an average of 60 yards per punt.  He averaged 46.3 yards per punt in the 2020 NFL season, that is great. He even threw a 29-yard pass on a tick play against the Kansas City Chiefs. But there is something that may be holding Charlton back from his full potential.

Charlton was placed on the injured reserve list by the Panthers before week six of the 2021 season with a “lower-back injury”. He was also seen with a boot on after being placed on this list. These injuries kept Charlton inactive until the last game of the season.

Charlton found himself on the Jacksonville Jaguars punting in the last game of the 2021 regular season after coming off seven weeks of inactivity. Colts fans are familiar with this game. Charlton punted the ball three times averaging 50.67 yards per punt. Showing that he was back at full health.

Charlton could be a great addition if the worst case scenario becomes reality.

Cameron Nizialek

Nizialek has been a journeyman thus far, starting in the  Alliance of American Football . He got his big time opportunity with the Atlanta Falcons. In four games Nizialek punted the ball 18 times for a total of 817 yards. Quick math, that is 45.4 yards per punt. His longest punt on record is 62 yards.

Nizialek was sidelined with a hamstring injury, and he lost his job. He is in full health at the moment and could be a last ditch effort if the Indianapolis Colts are unsuccessful in signing other punters.
