Why Didn’t Tyus Jones Get Traded

All season long, the Washington Wizards have been wheeling and dealing to better their odds for the future. The Wizards have a strategy and game plan. It remains to be seen at this point. However, they have something up their sleeve that they are betting on and it may all play out this summer.

With that being the case, all season long we have heard that the Wizards are open to moving on and trading their starting point guard, Tyus Jones. This was a potential move that many may have simply wondered why they would do such a thing. Jones may not be an all star like John Wall, Russell Westbrook, and Gilbert Arenas was. However, he is solid and can hold things down while the Wizards search for that guy.

A trade was expected to happen for Jones this season. He has been on many team’s radar. However, the Philadelphia 76ers were the front runners and team that had shown the most interest in acquiring Tyus Jones. With that being the case, why wasn’t Tyus Jones traded?

The Wizards would have loved to get something great in return for Jones. They know his ceiling and know what they need as a team to improve. They even lowered their asking price for Jones too. However, some things are beyond the Wizard’s control. General Manager Darryl Morey of the Philadelphia 76ers can be a difficult man to do business with. We all remember how things played out with both Ben Simmons and James Harden. The Wizards may have lowered their asking price for Morey and that still wasn’t enough for him.

Additionally, with Joel Embiid being out for probably the remainder of the season, this season may be loss for the 76ers. His injury has a lot to do with Tyus Jones not being traded. Although the Philadelphia 76ers made a trade to acquire Buddy Heild, that was a move the Sixers had eyes on for a while as he has been a highly coveted player on their radar for quite some time now. The Sixers see him for their longterm future plans. Tyus Jones was a short term player the Sixers had eyes on that could help them this year in the playoffs as they already have their point guard of the future with all star Tyrese Maxey. With everything that has happened, the Sixers have eyes on a much cheaper option as a backup point guard now in Kyle Lowry as they are hoping he will be bought out soon by the Charlotte Hornets.

Tyus Jones also gives the Wizards options now as this summer he will be an unrestricted free agent. Should the Wizards sign him back to a long term deal or explore other options via a sign and trade, free agent signing, or even perhaps through the NBA Draft?
