Wesley Matthews earned the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award during the Marquette University Alumni National Awards.
The Milwaukee Bucks veteran earned the honors for his stellar career with Marquette, which was highlighted by four NCAA tournament appearances and 94 victories.
Stellar collegiate career
Matthews is the 22nd player in school history to score 1,000 career points, and his 1,673 points rank 10th all-time. The 6-foot-5 Matthews ranks among the career leaders in free throws made (2nd) and attempted (2nd), sixth in games played, and 22nd in rebounding (628).
While playing for Marquette, Matthews was named to the All-Big East Second Team selection in 2008-09. The 14-year NBA veteran earned a degree in Advertising from Marquette’s Diederich College of Communication in 2009.
Undrafted but highly regarded
Matthews played 52 games in the regular season this year, averaging 3.4 points, 2.2 rebounds, 0.7 assists, 0.4 steals, and 0.3 blocks in 15.8 minutes a game.
A native of Madison, Wisconsin, Matthews is playing for his sixth in the NBA. He entered the NBA in 2009 and started his career with the Utah Jazz as an undrafted player.
Wesley, known as a lockdown defender and a reliable outside shooter, also had stops with the Portland Trail Blazers, Dallas Mavericks, and Indiana Pacers before joining Milwaukee.
In 950 career games, Matthews is averaging 11.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 0.2 blocks, and 1.0 steals.
Matthews is one of Milwaukee’s seven unrestricted free agents, and it remains unclear whether he will return for his fourth season with the Bucks.
