Kerr, 56, was an assistant coach under Greg Popovich at the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo last summer.
"It was a surprise, to be honest, even though we spent the summer together in Tokyo," Kerr said in a press conference at Chase Center on Monday, via The San Francisco Chronicle. "It was a wonderful experience to be part of USA Basketball, but you just don’t stop and think, ‘Maybe I’ll be the head coach.’ It’s not something you even dream about. You just put your head down and work.
"So when this call came, it gave me chills. It’s the opportunity of a lifetime."

Kerr will coach the team at the 2023 World Cup in the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia, as well as the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra, Phoenix Suns head coach Monty Williams, and Gonzaga University head coach Mark Few will be his assistant coaches, the Chronicle said.
Before Kerr jets off to coach the national team, however, he will be leading the Warriors to what will hopefully be another postseason appearance. The Dubs currently sit in second place in the West, just half a game behind the rival Phoenix Suns.
Kerr did, however, extend an invitation to Warriors point guard and newly crowned three-point king Steph Curry to be on the national roster.
"If Steph is healthy and wants to play, I'm pretty sure I can convince Grant to put him on the roster." - USA Basketball coach Steve Kerr.
