Trade exception may be Wizards best return for Rui Hachimura

The Washington Wizards parted with 2019 first-round draft pick Rui Hachimura, trading him to the Los Angeles Lakers. In exchange, the Wizards received reserved guard Kendrick Nunn and three second-round picks, two of which don’t arrive until 2028 and 2029.

The return doesn’t seem all that appealing. However, the Wizards did receive an enticing piece for trading away Hachimura. Washington got a trade exception that equals Hachimura’s 2022-23 salary of $6,263,188. The Wizards have until January 24, 2024, to use the exception, a full year from the trade being official.

That means the Wizards can acquire a player or multiple players equal to the trade exception amount without counting against the team’s salary cap and luxury tax limit.

Coincidentally, Washington used a $5.2 million Montrezl Harrell trade exception to acquire Nunn. Nunn expects to be an unrestricted free agent this upcoming summer.

The three second-round draft picks could be packaged for future trade(s) too. However, not many will be thrilled by Round two picks.

Wizards general manager Tommy Sheppard has made his calling with trades. Some would say to withstand questionable draft choices. Moving Hachimura opens the door for the team to work out contracts with Kyle Kuzma and Kristaps Porzingis. The two with Bradley Beal will ideally form the Wizards’ big three.

With limited cap room, Sheppard may have to get creative to build a supporting cast around Beal, Kuzma, and Porzingis. A trade exception is another tool at Sheppard’s disposal as he attempts to construct a winning roster in Washington. It’s an aspect that is sure to factor in the Wizards’ summer or next year’s trade deadline.
