There has been some buzz linking Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young to the San Antonio Spurs to pair up with Victor Wembanyama. And if you ask Carmelo Anthony, he wants to see it happen.

Anthony has no doubt in his mind that a pairing of Wembanyama and Young can unlock wonders for a Spurs team looking to return to title contention really soon.

What Does San Antonio Spurs Need for Victor Wembanyama?

During a recent episode of his 7PM in Brooklyn podcast with The Kid Mero (as presented by Wave Sports + Entertainment Original), the duo discussed about Wembanyama, his development in San Antonio and what kind of player San Antonio can get to pair up with him.

When The Kid Mero shared his shock about the Spurs’ struggles even with Wemby putting up absurd numbers, Anthony was quick to defend San Antonio and highlighted that they clearly have a “plan” for the Frenchman.

“They got a plan for the kid. Let it play out. Pop [Gregg Popovich] knew they was gonna be trash…So San Antonio is not in no rush. They are one of those organizations that build and develop. They got a plan for him, let it play out. Be patient,” Anthony said.

When his co-host wondered which player would be a perfect fit that the Spurs can partner with the generational talent, Anthony said they could probably use a “shooter.”

“It’s hard to say. It’s just the very beginning of it so you don’t know how he might [develop]. You have an idea of the type of pieces you’d want around him. Shooters, you gotta have an explosive point guard, a playmaker but not someone that’s shoot first, score first. Again, this is like a trial run for San Antonio,” Melo added.

“Let’s see physically can he last throughout the season; how does he respond to the bumps and bruises and rookie wall? They just checking the list as it’s a full-year plan.”

Trae Young To Join Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio Spurs?

Trae Young has been linked with the San Antonio Spurs prior to the 2023-24 trade deadline, and those talks about him possibly leaving the franchise are expected to come up again in the offseason considering how much Atlanta has struggled even with him on the team.

With that said, when The Kid Mero mentioned to Carmelo Anthony that Young could be a trade target for the Spurs to join forces with Victor Wembanyama, the eyes of the former Denver Nuggets and New York Knicks superstar lit up. For him, it’s the perfect fit.

“Trae? Yea! Hell yea. I think you need another alpha. Trae Young brings a certain type of energy. So I think that’s something San Antonio should look at.”

It will definitely be interesting to see if the Spurs will chase for Ice Trae. The Hawks sharpshooter has expressed his desire to stay in Atlanta, but as everyone knows, there’s nothing guaranteed in the NBA.
