Rudy Gobert deserved hefty fine for 'inappropriate' gesture

Rudy Gobert was been fined $100,000 for an "inappropriate and unprofessional gesture" during the Minnesota Timberwolves loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday. Gobert's issues began when he was whistled for his sixth foul late in the fourth quarter. As such, he was ejected from the game for fouling out. He then produced the money sign toward the game official.

Speaking to the media after the game, Gobert continued to instigate the issue. He began discussing the role of sports betting within professional sports, insinuating that he felt officials could sometimes look to influence the game.

“Mistakes happen," Gobert said. "Referees make mistakes, too. But sometimes I think it’s more than mistakes. I think everyone that’s in this league knows. I think it’s got to get better. I know the betting and all that is becoming bigger and bigger, but it shouldn’t feel that way.”

Gobert has a history of inflammatory comments regarding game officials. He's also been outspoken over league-mandated rules in the past. One of the more memorable outbursts was at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic when he rubbed his hands over all the microphones at a press conference.

That history, along with the gravity of his insinuation, which questioned the very competitive fabric of the league, is why his fine is so hefty. The league is looking to make an example out of one of the most outspoken stars in the league.

Nevertheless, Minnesota will likely be pleased that Joe Dumars showed restraint. The league office could easily have handed Gobert a suspension. The Timberwolves are already without Karl-Anthony Towns due to a meniscus tear. Losing their other star big man for a stretch of games would have been incredibly unfortunate.

Gobert needs to read the room. The Timberwolves are relying on him. He's having an amazing season on the defensive end. He needs to focus on basketball and accept that some things on the court are outside of his control. The league was right to pass down a heavy fine.

However, if Gobert offends again this season, he will undoubtedly be sidelined. He needs to learn his lesson. Otherwise, his actions could cost the Timberwolves, which would be a shame considering the amazing season they're having.
