Philadelphia 76ers Emerge As Favorites To Sign Klay Thompson
Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia 76ers are currently leading the odds as the likely new home for Klay Thompson, should the four-time NBA champion choose to leave the Golden State Warriors this offseason.

According to Bookies.com, the Sixers are at +325, translating to a 23.5% chance, edging out the Los Angeles Lakers who stand at +450, or an 18.2% likelihood.

The Sixers’ interest in Thompson comes amid a performance slump from Buddy Hield in their first-round playoff series against the New York Knicks, highlighting a need for a reliable shooter to complement Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.

Thompson, who scored a nine-year low average of 17.9 points this season on 43.2% shooting, has shown variability in his performance, possibly due to the uncertainty surrounding his future with the Warriors. Despite this, he shot a career-high 92.7% from the free-throw line, indicating his enduring skill level.

At 34, Thompson’s potential move could provide the Sixers with valuable championship experience. Playing alongside an inside player like Embiid could also offer Thompson considerable space on the court, possibly rejuvenating his career.

Beyond Thompson, the Sixers also have their sights set on Paul George of the Los Angeles Clippers, who remains Philadelphia’s top free agent target. George could command a four-year max deal worth $212.2 million.

However, Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer expressed skepticism about George’s departure from Los Angeles, suggesting, “Call me a cynic… I believe the small forward’s stated interest in the Sixers is about creating leverage with the Clippers.”

The outcomes of the current playoff series could be crucial for these potential moves. The Sixers recently narrowed the Knicks’ lead to 2-1, with the next game set for April 27 in Philadelphia.

Meanwhile, George and the Clippers are attempting to regain their homecourt advantage against the Mavericks in Dallas.
