Mason Plumlee Urges Clippers To Keep Playing Daniel Theis Over Him
Jonathan Hui-USA TODAY Sports

Los Angeles Clippers coach Tyronn Lue shared that center Mason Plumlee approached him with a team-first mindset this NBA season. Aware of the Clippers’ impressive run of winning 17 out of their last 22 games while he’s been sidelined while recovering from knee surgery to repair a sprained left MCL, Plumlee expressed his willingness to take a backseat to teammate Daniel Theis to maintain the team’s successful momentum.

Coach Lue acknowledged Plumlee’s availability but emphasized the importance of a cautious approach in integrating him into the team’s dynamic. This strategy is aimed at preserving the team’s current form while ensuring Plumlee’s effective re-entry into the lineup.

“He is available, but we still want to make sure we are doing the right thing and making sure that we’re taking the slow (road) and ease him back in,” Lue said.

Theis has been a key contributor in his 21 appearances this season, averaging 7.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and nearly one block per game. He has proven to be a valuable asset to the Clippers. In a recent game against Miami, Theis scored six points in 16 minutes, demonstrating his efficiency on the court.

Despite Theis’s solid performances, the coaching staff has yet to define his role upon Plumlee’s return, leaving some uncertainty in the team’s composition.

“We’ll see what will happen,” Theis said.

Theis brings a unique element to the Clippers with his shooting ability, capable of making mid-range shots and launching 3-pointers. This versatility provides the Clippers with more offensive options and opens up the floor for other players. Theis, encouraged by the team to take shots when open, has embraced this role, understanding its importance in the Clippers’ offensive strategy.

Plumlee, known for his athleticism and offensive skills, has averages of 5.5 rebounds, 5.0 points, and 1.0 assist in six games this season. In his most recent performance against the Knicks, he scored 2 points, showcasing his contributions in limited minutes.

This situation with Plumlee and Theis highlights the depth and adaptability of the Clippers’ roster as they seek to contend for an NBA title. The willingness to accept smaller roles and make sacrifices has been a theme for the group this season.
