Lakers' Dion Waiters opens up about battle with depression

Dion Waiters opened up about some of the worst decisions he's made in his life, including an incident with edibles during a team flight when he was with the Miami Heat.

Waiters acknowledged it was "idiotic" of him to do drugs in a piece written for The Players' Tribune. He also noted he suffered from depression during the time the incident occurred. 

“Even the hardest motherf***ers in the world go through depression, man,” said a vulnerable Waiters. “No cap. You know, I think sometimes the world needs to be reminded that we’re not superheroes. I came from the bottom. I seen it all. But when I go home at night, I’m just like you. I go through depression, just like you. I go through anxiety, just like you. This last year and a half, I done been through it.”

Waiters, hopefully, gets the help he needs to deal with his depression. Perhaps joining LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers can help with the change of scenery.

In four seasons with the Heat, the 28-year-old averaged 13.9 points, 2.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game while shooting 41.3 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from beyond the arc. He's also had stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Oklahoma City Thunder.

Waiters isn't the first NBA player to open up about his battle with depression. Cavaliers star Kevin Love also discussed his battle with depression and anxiety in a 2018 article written for The Players' Tribune.

While you may think athletes are invincible, it's important to remember they experience many of the same things that average people do every day.
