Klay Thompson Embraces Warriors Bench Role, Compares To Manu Ginobili
Chris Nicoll-USA TODAY Sports

In the Golden State Warriors’ thrilling 140-137 victory against the Utah Jazz during Thursday’s NBA action, Klay Thompson showcased his adaptability and prowess despite assuming a bench role for the first time in over a decade.

Thompson, a cornerstone of the Warriors’ lineup, erupted for a season-best 35 points, afterward expressing his acceptance and enthusiasm for his new role. He drew inspiration from Manu Ginobili, the San Antonio Spurs legend, who achieved tremendous success and recognition while often coming off the bench.

“I thought about [former Spurs great] Manu Ginobli, that guy has four rings and gold medal, and he came off the bench his whole career, and I don’t think anyone looks down on his Hall of Fame candidacy,” Thompson said. “He’s one of the greats. And I thought, I mean, I embraced it before tip, and I mean, I deserved it really.”

Warriors coach Steve Kerr has been experimenting with different lineup configurations throughout the season to optimize team performance. The adjustment in Thompson’s role marked a significant shift, initiated after a strategic decision in a previous game against the Brooklyn Nets, where Thompson was not included in the closing lineup. This change was part of Kerr’s ongoing efforts to find the most effective combinations for the team.

Thompson’s transition to a bench role ended his streak of 684 consecutive starts, a testament to his long-standing impact on the Warriors since his rookie season. Kerr acknowledged Thompson’s initial reluctance to the change but emphasized the potential benefits for both Thompson and the team.

“It’s been a tricky season for him and for us,” Kerr said. “It’s not as easy to do what Klay did five or six years ago for him. I think this could be a good balance to get the best out of Klay and to get the best out of our team.”

This strategic move paid off during the game against Utah. Thompson’s exceptional performance from the field, including a notable three-point shooting display, underscored his ability to excel in any role. As the Warriors approach the All-Star break on a winning streak, this lineup adjustment could provide the team with a renewed dynamic and strengthen their position for the postseason.
