Heat lifer calls time on memorable 20-year career

Udonis Haslem enjoyed a 20-year career with the Miami Heat. At times, Haslem was an impactful starter for Miami, while at others, he was a core bench player. Yet, from age 36 to 42, Haslem held a locker room leader role, spending the majority of his time holding players accountable from the bench.

However, for the first time in two decades, the Heat will open a new season without Haslem's name appearing on the team sheet. Haslem has officially retired from the NBA, joining a rare group of players to spend his entire career with one franchise.

The term "Heat Culture" is often thrown around during NBA discussions, both with media and fans alike. There's a notion that Miami knows how to spot diamonds in the rough and develop them into genuine role players or even stars at the NBA level. Miami, as a basketball city, celebrates grit, determination and a never-say-die attitude. Throughout his tenure with Miami, Haslem has personified "Heat Culture," both as a player and a leader.

After making it to the NBA Finals last season, but ultimately falling short, Haslem will end his NBA career with three championship rings to his name. During his tenure, the Miami native failed to make a single All-Star appearance due to his role-player status. Yet, if there was ever a "non-star" player deserving of having their jersey retired, it's Haslem.

Where most players would have left their hometown team to chase rings, or bigger paydays, Haslem stayed. He became a de facto player/coach. A voice of reason among the younger players and veterans alike. And most importantly, Haslem was Erik Spoelstra's link between the coaching and playing staff. The Heat won't be able to replace what Haslem bought to the team, but they can be grateful they had 20 years of his impact, influence and leadership. Haslem will be a huge loss to the Miami Heat.
