Former ESPN NBA broadcaster could reunite with longtime announcing partner

The 58-year-old was fired by his former employer in July as a part of ESPN's massive group of layoffs. The trio of Breen, Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy called nearly 100 NBA Finals games together over the years.

Van Gundy was among roughly 20 on-air personalities let go by ESPN in a reported effort to save "tens of millions of dollars" at the beginning of July.

Jackson was selected by the New York Knicks with the 18th overall pick in the 1987 NBA Draft and won the Rookie of the Year award. The former point guard played 17 seasons in the Association -- primarily with the Knicks and Indiana Pacers -- and made one All-Star team, while also leading the league in assists once.

Jackson spent three seasons as the head coach of the Golden State Warriors from 2011-14 and despite leading them to two playoff appearances, was fired in May 2014.

According to the report by Andrew Marchand of the New York Post, MSG Network "had interest" in Van Gundy calling some Knicks games during the 2023-24 season, but it is "very unlikely to happen."

"Both Jackson and Van Gundy had money remaining on their ESPN contracts and likely would need permission from ESPN to be allowed to do it," Marchand wrote. "ESPN is handling them on a case-by-case basis, and Jackson’s case is trending the right way for him to fill in on some games for the 78-year-old Frazier."
