ESPN insider proposes sending Andrew Wiggins to the Hornets

Andrew Wiggins is widely expected to be traded by the Golden State Warriors. The veteran wing has struggled throughout the first half of the season. He isn't playing the type of defense that helped Golden State win the 2022 NBA Championship. His offense has also been stagnant.

With Wiggins appearing like he needs a change of situation, ESPN's Bobby Marks has proposed a trade to send him to the Charlotte Hornets. In return, the Warriors would receive Gordon Hayward, who is in the final few months of his current contract.

"Trade we would like to see: Hayward to Golden State for Andrew Wiggins and Gary Payton II," Marks wrote in his Eastern Conference trade deadline primer.

Hayward would provide Golden State with a significant boost on the wings. He's a legitimate point forward who can defend at a high level. His expiring deal would ensure there's little risk attached to the trade from the Warriors' perspective.

Wiggins, on the other hand, is in the first year of a four-year $109 million deal. That contract could work for the Hornets. They need a defensive anchor to slot into their core of LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller. Wiggins, 28, is young enough to be an important player for Charlotte for the entire duration of his contract and potentially beyond.

However, the Hornets front office would have to believe they can get Wiggins back to his best. This season, he's averaging 11.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.5 assists, shooting 42% from the field and 28.6% from 3-point range.

Charlotte needs a leader. Wiggins would bring championship experience to a young and developing roster. There's logic behind Marks' thinking. Whether the Warriors view Hayward as the type of player who can help turn their season around and are confident he can remain healthy is another question.

Still, if the Warriors are looking to move on from Wiggins, acquiring Hayward isn't a bad option, should it be available.
