Bucks superstar sets prestigious franchise record
Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo drives against the Philadelphia 76ers Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Coming off a thrilling season-opening win against the Philadelphia 76ers, Giannis Antetokounmpo has once again etched his name in the record books.

Antetokounmpo surpasses Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

In the Bucks home opener, Antetokounmpo became the franchise's all-time leader in made field goals, a record previously held by NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar at 5,902. Antetokounmpo had eight filed goals in Thursday’s win, which brought his number to 5,903, topping Abdul-Jabbar.

Antetokounmpo was already the franchise leader in games played, field goal attempts, career assists and free-throw attempts and he is on pace to be the Bucks’ all-time leading rebounder. While Antetokounmpo about 271 shy of Abdul-Jabbar’s rebound record, the way Giannis played Thursday, he should take that record during the season.

In addition to setting Thursday's franchise mark, Antetokoumpo also moved up a little bit on the NBA’s all-time rebounding list. Coming into Thursday night, he had 6,891 career boards, which was tied with Antoine Walker for 124th all-time. But with his first rebound against the Sixers, Antetokounmpo moved ahead of Walker and took sole possession of 124th place. The next player for Giannis to pass will be Rudy LaRusso (6,936).

Giannis finished Thursday’s contest with 23 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. From the field, he shot 10-for-22, while his teammate Damian Lillard, making his regular-season Bucks debut, scored 39 points – the most a player has scored in their Bucks debut – and went 17-for-17 at the charity stripe.

After signing a three-year contract extension, Giannis has made it clear that he is all about winning and bringing home a championship. Already starting this season by surpassing franchise records, who knows what the campaign will hold for the two-time MVP?

Up next for the Bucks:

Following Thursday’s win against the 76ers, the Bucks will have two days off before they welcome the Atlanta Hawks to Fiserv Forum.
