Atlanta Hawks Player Will Miss First 2 Weeks Of NBA Season
USA TODAY Sports

On Wednesday evening, the Atlanta Hawks  will play their first game of the 2023-24 regular season when they visit LaMelo Ball and the Charlotte Hornets in North Carolina.

For the game, they will be without 14-year veteran Wesley Matthews, and the team has now  announced that he is out for at least two weeks.

Via The Hawks: "Wesley Matthews underwent an MRI yesterday. The MRI revealed a mild right calf strain. He will be re-evaluated in two weeks and his status will be updated as appropriate."

Matthews is coming off a year where he averaged 3.4 points and 2.2 rebounds per contest while shooting 36.3% from the field and 31.5% from the three-point range in 52 games for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Over 14 seasons in the league, he has played for the Portland Trail Blazers, Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers, Indiana Pacers, New York Knicks, Milwaukee Bucks and Utah Jazz.

His career averages are 11.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.0 steals per contest while shooting 42.0% from the field and 37.6% from the three-point range in 950 regular season games.

He has also played in 66 NBA playoff games, so Matthews brings a good level of experience to the Hawks.

The Hawks are coming off a year where they went 41-41 and were the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference.

After beating the Miami Heat in the play-in tournament, they lost to Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics in the first round of the NBA playoffs (in six games).
