Adam Silver discusses possible punishment for Raptors PF after alleged 'cardinal sin'

NBA commissioner Adam Silver gave an update on Wednesday regarding the situation surrounding Jontay Porter.

It was reported on March 25 that the NBA had opened an investigation into "multiple instances of betting irregularities" in recent months involving the Toronto Raptors power forward.

According to a report by AP Sports editor Brian Mahoney, Silver's comments on Wednesday didn't "reveal any specifics" involving the investigation, aside from that the probe was "ongoing."

The 24-year-old Missouri product hasn't played since March 22 against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Raptors listed Porter as out due to "personal reasons" for the 10th consecutive contest on Wednesday against the Brooklyn Nets. Toronto closes its season with road games against the Miami Heat on Friday and Sunday.

Mahoney's report added that Porter's absence "started almost simultaneously to the revelation that the NBA was probing the betting patterns surrounding his games."

ESPN's initial report said the investigation was focused on the former Memphis Grizzlies forward's performance in games on Jan. 26 and March 20.

The younger brother of Denver Nuggets standout Michael Porter Jr. played just four minutes and recorded three rebounds, one assist and one personal foul without attempting a field goal on Jan. 26 against the Los Angeles Clippers. Porter played only three minutes on March 20 against the Sacramento Kings, registering two rebounds and missing his only field-goal attempt.

He left both games early citing an injury or illness, per Mahoney's report, and didn't "come close to the numbers that were offered to bettors as prop wagers in those contests."

"That means those who basically bet against Porter would have cashed in, because he left those games before reaching the lines set by sportsbooks for his points and rebounds in those contests," Mahoney wrote.

Mahoney wrote that some sportsbooks said they were "alerted to odd betting patterns surrounding the Porter prop offerings in those games," meaning it's "likely that the league — which has business relationships with many wagering companies — may have received some of that same information."

“I mean, this is not new that there’s unsavory behavior, even illegal behavior, around sports betting,” Silver said. “I guess my point is that to the extent it’s going to exist, if you have a regulated environment, you’re going to have a better chance of detecting it than you would if all the bets were placed illegally.”
