Denny Hamlin claims Martin Truex Jr. admitted to him the 'he lost his mind' after wild Richmond race loss
Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr. had an intense overtime battle at Richmond last Sunday for the win and the former won the race using some questionable tactics.  The No:11 driver supposedly jump started and used up his teammate to secure the win. Truex Jr. was furious at his teammate over the incident and retaliated by bumping him multiple times on the cool-down lap.

After the race Denny Hamlin texted his 2017 Cup championship winning teammate and asked him about why he was that upset. Martin Truex Jr. responded saying that losing race, despite leading over 200 laps just because of the overtime drama. Hamlin made all the revelation via his podcast Action Detrimental while talking about his victory.

I texted Truex, I says, ‘Am I missing something of why you’re so upset?...I’ll paraphrase it for you, he says ‘No, we’re all good I just lost my mind.’ That’s what he said, paraphrasing. ‘No you’re fine, I lost my mind there for a minute.’ My response is, well rightfully so. He obviously deserved to win the race, he had the race won, but surely that was a bad five minutes for him and the 19 team. Denny Hamlin said via Action Detrimental.

Even Hamlin acknowledges that Martin Truex Jr. had all the right to be upset and frustrated as he lost the race after coming that close and that too to his teammate. The last five minutes of the extended race was a big headache for No:19 crew and the driver. The quick settlement of issues between the two shows the maturity of both veterans.

Denny Hamlin admitted that he re-started pretty early at Richmond

In the podcast Hamlin addressed the jump-start allegations and pointed out that he did start a bit early. But he defended himself by pointing out that he did in the restarting zone only. He also claimed that in TV his supposed jumpstart seem much worse compared to what he sees when looking from his car.

I went pretty early in the zone… It’s a restart zone. Certainly, if you fire in a zone that they know you’re going to fire in, let’s not even say zone — in a spot — if they know you’re going to fire in a spot, they can actually fire before you. I concede that on TV, it looks worse than what it felt like in the car. Denny Hamlin said.

Both Hamlin and Truex Jr. has already shifted their attention towards winning the next weekend’s race at Martinsville. They would be among the contenders to watch out for considering the short-track package JGR has fielded so far this season and the No:19 would be hoping to redeem himself with a win on Sunday.
