Bubba Wallace on spinning Kyle Larson late at Richmond: ‘Karma is quick in this sport’

Bubba Wallace played a role in the late-race fireworks that were captured during the Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond Raceway.

With only laps remaining in the race, it looked like Martin Truex Jr. was on his way to his first win of 2024, but then Kyle Larson was spun by the No. 23 in Wallace, which set up a green-white-checkered finish. Larson got loose, but Wallace finished him off, although the No. 5 only lost a couple spots that he re-gained on pit road.

Afterwards, FOX’s Bob Pockrass caught up with Wallace, where the 23XI Racing wheelman joked that karma had a hand in the finish of the race for Larson and himself, as the No. 5 came home with a P3 finish, while Wallace lost a ton of spots on pit road, going from what would’ve been a top five to a semi-disappointment.

“Got loose. Overcorrected. They ended up better. Karma’s a real thing. Cost us but, I was really content with fifth. Just got loose and overcorrected it into him,” Wallace told Pockrass. “Apologize to the No. 5 team. Not intentional, by all means. But karma is quick in this sport, for sure.”

Alas, that corroborated what Larson told FOX after his finish to the race, where he certainly wasn’t mad for someone who got spun with single-digit laps remaining in the contest.

“Well I was a little bit loose, and then I got finished off there. So thankfully it all kind of just worked out,” Larson said, regarding his contact with Wallace. “I didn’t — I only lost whatever, a spot to Bubba [Wallace], and to [William] Byron there. I was able to keep it going. My pit crew did a really good job, getting us off pit road. Getting us two spots. Restart fourth, and then we gained one more. So I will take a third, after what could’ve been a lot worse there on the front stretch.

“Proud of the HendrickCars.com team. Proud of Chevy. Everybody at Hendrick Motorsports. So it was a good weekend for us. Getting the pole and winning a stage. Getting back to third there at the end. So, happy about that.”

There you have it, as the conspiracy theories of whether Bubba Wallace turned Kyle Larson for revenge, or to give his team owner a shot at a win can now be dissolved. Wallace and Larson are fine, but Martin Truex Jr. may have some beef with the No. 23 moving forward. We’ll see.
