Yankees place infielder DJ LeMahieu on 10-day IL with sports hernia

The New York Yankees are placing infielder DJ LeMahieu on the 10-day injured list with a sports hernia, manager Aaron Boone told reporters Sunday, including ESPN's Marly Rivera.

LeMahieu has not played since Sept. 30 due to the injury and the soonest he could return for the Yankees would be if they qualified for the ALCS.

Boone told reporters Saturday that LeMahieu will need offseason surgery to address the ailment.

The 33-year-old exited Thursday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays in the sixth inning with hip soreness. Before Thursday's game, Boone said the three-time Gold Glover had been dealing with hip and groin soreness for a while.

It's unclear how long LeMahieu has been playing through the ailment. He's been solid this season regardless, hitting .268/.349/.362 with 10 home runs and 57 RBI in 150 games.

The Yankees re-signed LeMahieu to a six-year, $90 million extension before the 2021 campaign began, rewarding him after finishing third in AL MVP voting last season.

LeMahieu should be good to go for the start of the 2022 season, but it all depends on when he gets the surgery and how long it takes for him to recover.
