On this day in 1973, a man named George Steinbrenner made an important investment, buying the New York Yankees for the price of $10 million.
At the time, the Yankees were not the team we all know them to be.
While still undeniably storied, New York had yet to reach the postseason since 1964, when they fell short in the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals.
In short, it ended up working out quite well for the Yankees.
Under “The Boss”, the Yankees reached the World Series 11 times from 1976-2009, winning seven times and bumping their total of World Series rings up to 27.
On Twitter, a Yankees fan tweeted a screenshot of the headline on the day that Steinbrenner purchased the Yankees.

At the time, the Yankees weren’t exactly a powerhouse, and Steinbrenner didn’t make many of the headlines.
But soon, that would change.
With Steinbrenner at the helm, New York returned to its winning ways.
The Yankees owner gained more recognition over time for his willingness to make big moves to improve the Yankees and his goal of winning at all costs.
The team experienced its most impressive run of success in the late 1990s and early 2000s, when they reached the World Series six times in an eight-year span, winning four times from 1996-2000.
New York became a regular threat to win the World Series each year and regained their status as a powerhouse.
Steinbrenner passed away in 2010, but his impact on the Yankees and the City of New York is still felt to this day.
