Yankees' Aaron Boone talks potential changes that could impact job status

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone spoke Sunday about potential offseason changes that could impact the organization and possibly cost him his job.

"I think it’s something where they’re looking at everything," Boone told Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com. "I think it’s something that we’ve wanted to do for years. There’s a lot that goes into going in and breaking down every department. I think it’s more oversight into everything we’re doing. We’re always trying to find that higher ground in everything we do, I think it’s a great thing." 

Boone was responding to how Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner told Mark Didtler of The Associated Press last week that the club's front office is "looking to bring in possibly an outside company to really take a look at the analytics side (and baseball operations) of what we do." Steinbrenner also said at that time that the big-spending Yankees being a last-place team this late into the campaign is "obviously unacceptable." 

The 68-69 Yankees began Monday sitting eight-and-a-half games back in the race for a wild-card playoff spot. 

Conflicting reports emerged throughout August regarding whether Boone is in danger of losing his job even though he guided the Yankees to the playoffs each year from 2018 through 2022. By all accounts, Steinbrenner will retain senior vice president and general manager Brian Cashman through at least next year. 

"I think it’s checking on everything," Boone answered when asked about Steinbrenner possibly thinking the Yankees are "too analytical" as it pertains to baseball operations. "Analytics is all part of it." 

While individuals such as All-Star slugger Aaron Judge and utility man Isiah Kiner-Falefa defended Boone and insisted in late August that the club's woes are "more on the players" than the manager, the fact remains that the Yankees haven't played in a World Series since they won the 2009 Fall Classic and are on track to finish the season in the basement of the American League East standings. 

Unhappy fans want Steinbrenner to make some noteworthy change this fall, and that reality could result in the owner and Cashman parting ways with Boone shortly after the season comes to an end.
