White Sox Trade C Reese McGuire to Red Sox for LHP Jake Diekman

The Chicago White Sox have completed their first trade deadline move. According to multiple reports, the White Sox traded catcher Reese McGuire to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for left-handed pitcher Jake Diekman. Chicago will also send Boston a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Acquired from the Blue Jays prior to the 2022 season, McGuire never panned out for the White Sox. He posted a .225/.261/.285 slash line with zero home runs and 10 RBIs in 166 plate appearances across 53 games. The Red Sox had a need behind the plate after sending Christian Vazquez to the Houston Astros earlier in the day.

Coming over from Boston, Diekman gives the White Sox a much-needed left-handed bullpen arm. He owns a 4.23 ERA, 1.487 WHIP, and a 12.0 K/9 rate across 38.1 innings this season.

With southpaw Aaron Bummer eyeing a September return , Jake Diekman figures to serve as the top lefty option out of the Chicago White Sox bullpen. As currently constructed, Tanner Banks is the only other left-hander on the South Siders’ pitching staff.
