White Sox Routed by Orioles Again
Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Ugly losses are standard operating procedure for the Chicago White Sox at the tail end of the 2023 campaign. On Tuesday, they allowed nine runs to the Baltimore Orioles for the second consecutive game. Jesse Scholtens pitched well but the relief crew faltered, and the White Sox offense hardly existed outside of Lenyn Sosa's solo homer.

Chicago put two more runs on the board in the ninth when the game was out of reach.

Scholtens has performed admirably since being thrust into the starting rotation after six pitchers were traded at the deadline. He tossed 5.1 innings and allowed only one run on six hits. The righty fanned one and issued no free passes.

Lenyn Sosa staked Scholtens to a one-run lead by opening the scoring in the third with a solo homer.

However, the potent Baltimore lineup could only be held at bay for so long. The Orioles got even in the fifth when Adam Frazier singled to score Austin Hays, who led off the inning with a base hit and advanced to third on Ramon Urias's single.

No Relief, No Offense

Tanner Banks relieved Scholtens in the sixth after Ryan Mountcaste's infield single and recorded the last two outs. Banks got the first out of the seventh, retiring all three hitters he faced. Aaron Bummer recorded the second out, but the O's rallied for three runs on Anthony Santander's double. Bummer allowed a single to Ryan McKenna before walking Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Hederson.

When It Rains, It Pours

Bryan Shaw pitched the eighth inning and got tagged for five runs on six hits. The veteran reliever recorded only one out before giving way to Lane Ramsey. The towering rookie induced a double-play ground ball off Mountcastle's bat to end the inning.

The White Sox managed to score a couple of runs in the ninth, with back-to-back-to-back singles by Eloy Jimenez, Yoan Moncada, and Andrew Vaughn plated a run. Oscar Colas grounded out to score Moncada, and Lenyn Sosa followed with a base hit. However, recently called-up catcher Korey Lee hit into a game-ending double play when he flew out to center, and Sosa was caught off first base.

“He thought that ball was going to land, but, again, I think (first base coach Daryl Boston) has already instructed him we are going base to base here,” White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said. “I think he thought that ball was going to fall in front of the center fielder.”

News and Notes

The White Sox placed starter Mike Clevinger on waivers. Teams have until the end of the month to claim him.

Recently traded pitchers Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez were also placed on waivers by the Los Angeles Angels.

Chicago promoted pitching prospects Nick Nastrini and Cristian Mena to Triple-A Charlotte.
