White Sox Get One-Hit By Orioles Bullpen in 4-1 Loss

The Chicago White Sox lost to the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night and lost a chance at winning the four-game series. Baltimore’s Austin Voth and four relievers held the White Sox offense to one hit and one run in their 4-1 victory. The South Siders have now lost three in a row at home where they own a 15-20 record.

Almost No-Hit

Voth made his second start of the season for the O’s. He worked 3.0 innings and allowed the Sox lone hit, a second-inning RBI double by Jake Burger. He issued Baltimore’s only two free passes. Andrew Vaughn’s two-out walk in the third was the White Sox last base runner.

Baltimore pitching retired the final 19 White Sox hitters in order. Joey Krehbiel worked 2.1 perfect innings before Bryan Baker and Cionel Pérez each got four outs. Jorge López pitched the ninth for his 13th save in 15 chances.

A Tense Moment

The only drama in the game came in the second inning. Michael Kopech plunked Jorge Mateo on a 1-2 count with two outs near the left shoulder and upper back. It was a pitch similar to the one that hit Josh Harrison on Thursday.

Mateo didn’t think he was hit purposely, but he had some words for Kopech. The benches cleared and the bullpens emptied but things did not escalate.

Mateo stole second and scored on a single by Richie Martin to make it 2-0.

Cedric Mullins led off the game with a bunt single and scored on a wild pitch in the first. Adley Rutschman doubled in the fourth and scored on a questionable balk. Austin Hays’ RBI double in the eighth extended Baltimore’s the lead to 4-1.

Kopech was the victim of his second loss in a row. The righty appeared to battle through this start without his best command. He surrendered just three runs on three hits despite walking four and fanning just two. The White Sox continue to look lifeless since taking the first two games of the homestand vs Toronto.

Notes

Luis Robert returned to the lineup after being held out on Thursday.

Yoan Moncada may be ready to return from the 10-day IL on Tuesday.

Baltimore has won three in a row and outscored their opponents 15-1 in those three games.
