Twins' Miguel Sano to have surgery on torn meniscus

Minnesota Twins first baseman Miguel Sano will undergo surgery on a torn meniscus in his left knee and will be out indefinitely according to Brit Gharoli of The Athletic.

Sano injured himself during the Twins' walk-off win over the Detroit Tigers on Apr. 26. He missed the next three games before starting Minnesota's victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Apr. 30 but was pulled in the seventh inning. After missing Sunday's win over the Rays, he was placed on the injured list on Monday.

It's a troubling development for Sano, who will turn 29 later this month. In 65 plate appearances, he is hitting .093 with one home run and 21 strikeouts. He is also in the final year of a three-year, $27 million contract extension that was signed in Jan. 2020.

While the Twins have a $14 million option for next season, they can exercise a $3 million buyout next winter. With top prospects Alex Kirilloff and Jose Miranda having experience at first base, this injury could jeopardize his long-term future in Minnesota.
