Trevor May makes Trevor Bauer joke after signing with Mets
Trevor May Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Mets landed one of the more talented relievers in free agency this week by signing former Minnesota Twins setup man Trevor May, and the fireballer exhibited some comical self-awareness by joking how the team’s fans covet another pitcher named Trevor more than him.

The Mets signed May to a two-year deal Wednesday, and the reliever did the classy and customary thing by thanking the Twins organization and its fans for all the support over the years.

Along with his heartfelt farewell to the Twins, May also took time to ingratiate himself to Mets Nation by breaking out Pete Alonso’s acronym-based — and profane — rallying cry that quickly became a fan favorite during the 2019 season.

Before that, though, May humorously acknowledged how Mets fans were probably hoping that a free-agent signing involving a pitcher named Trevor involved a certain ace on the market.

May of course was referring to Trevor Bauer, arguably the most sought-after player available in free agency this offseason — outside of superstar catcher J.T. Realmuto — that the Mets are believed to be pursuing.

It goes without saying that May did a bang-up job of making a great first impression on the Mets fan base with his social media activity on the day of his signing. Whether or not he thrives under the bright lights and pressure of pitching in the Big Apple, though, remains to be seen.
