Tony Gonsolin Expected to Begin Multi-Outing Rehab Assignment
USA TODAY Sports

Dodgers RHP Tony Gonsolin opened the 2023 season on the injured list with a left ankle injury that has taken much longer to heal than initially expected. Gonsolin threw a bullpen session over the weekend, and is finally progressing and getting close to a return to live baseball.

Ahead of Monday's game, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts spoke to reporters, and said that Gonsolin is going to begin doing rehab assignments. He's going to throw multiple outings before the team is ready to send him out at the major league level.

The Dodgers will see how Gonsolin performs in the rehab starts before giving a concrete return timeline, but it does sound like the initial target date of the end of April is still likely.

For now, the Dodgers have RHP Michael Grove filling in for Gonsolin in the rotation. After throwing four shutout innings to open Monday's game, Grove fell apart in the fifth inning, and ended with a final line of two hits, two walks, three earned runs and four strikeouts.

It wasn't a horrible outing by any means from Grove, and there were a lot of positives. Hopefully he's able to build on those in his next couple starts, before Gonsolin is able to make his return.

The biggest thing the Dodgers would like to see from Grove is going more than four-plus innings. He'll get his next opportunity on Sunday against the Diamondbacks.
