Spring training roundup: Corbin Burnes sharp in O's debut

Corbin Burnes struck out two and allowed one hit in one scoreless inning during his first spring training start since being traded to Baltimore earlier this month as the Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox 4-3 on Saturday in Sarasota, Fla.

Colton Cowser hit a two-run walk-off homer in the ninth and Adley Rutschman hit a solo homer to center field in the first inning. Morgan McSweeney (1-0) allowed one walk in one inning to pick up the win.

The Red Sox scored two runs in the third inning thanks to a solo homer by Mark Contreras and an RBI single by Bobby Dalbec.

Boston starter Garrett Whitlock allowed one run in two innings, striking out two. Nathan Tellier (0-1) took the loss after allowing a leadoff single to Errol Robinson in the ninth and then Cowser's homer.

Braves 6, Rays 5

Spencer Strider threw two scoreless innings in his spring debut, striking out four, and Michael Harris II homered and doubled to help Atlanta top Tampa Bay in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Strider (1-0) got the win, and Kodi Whitley gave up no runs and one walk in the ninth inning to earn the save.

Jose Siri and Jake Mangum homered for the Rays. Starter Nathan Wiles (0-1) allowed four runs, five hits and one walk in 1 2/3 innings and took the loss.

Marlins 9, Cardinals 8

Bryan De La Cruz went 2 for 4 with four RBIs and Tristan Gray hit a solo homer as Miami finished with 14 hits to edge St. Louis in Jupiter, Fla.

Marlins starter Ryan Weathers gave up two runs and three hits in two innings. Kent Emanuel (1-0) picked up the win despite allowing three hits and a run in one inning, and Jeff Lindgren earned the save.

Nolan Arenado went 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs. Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore allowed two runs and two hits in two innings. John King (0-1) blew the save after allowing four hits and three runs in the eighth inning.

Yankees 22, Tigers 10

New York had four homers among its 15 hits, including a three-run homer by Trent Grisham in his Yankees debut, in its lopsided win over Detroit in Lakeland, Fla.

Spencer Jones hit a 470-foot shot, and Luis Torrens and Jorbit Vivas also homered for New York. Starter Luis Gil (1-0) gave up two runs and struck out three in two innings for the win.

Andy Ibanez hit a two-run homer for Detroit. Starter Reese Olson (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs and three walks in 1 2/3 innings.

Twins 5, Pirates 3

Dalton Shuffield hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the sixth inning to help Minnesota hold off Pittsburgh in Fort Myers, Fla.

Twins starter Louie Varland gave up three hits in two scoreless innings. Daniel Duarte (1-0) pitched a scoreless sixth inning to pick up the win, and Miguel Rodriguez earned the save.

Pirates starter Bailey Falter pitched two innings, giving up four hits and two runs while striking out three. Kyle Nicolas took the loss after he allowed Shuffield's homer.

Phillies 14, Blue Jays 13

Weston Wilson went 2 for 3 with four RBIs and Johan Rojas added two hits and three RBIs to help Philadelphia hold off Toronto in Dunedin, Fla.

Scott Kingery, Matt Kroon and Wilson homered for Philadelphia. Nick Nelson (1-0) earned the win despite giving up four runs on five hits in two innings. Tyler McKay picked up the save.

Brian Serven and Daulton Varsho each drove in three runs for the Blue Jays. Yosver Zulueta (0-1) gave up seven runs (six earned) and six hits in two-thirds of an inning to take the loss.

Cardinals 10, Mets 5

Starter Zack Thompson (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win and Thomas Saggese and Luken Baker each drove in two runs as St. Louis doubled up New York in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Lars Nootbaar and Arquimedes Gamboa each had two hits for the Cardinals.

Hayden Senger homered and scored twice for the Mets. Starter Tylor Megill (0-1) took the loss, giving up one run and two hits in two innings while striking out three.

Astros 7, Nationals 4

Mauricio Dubon had three hits and drove in two runs as Houston beat Washington in Palm Beach, Fla.

Victor Caratini and Corey Julks each drove in two runs for the Astros. Starter Ronel Blanco (1-0) gave up one hit and struck out two in two scoreless innings for the win.

Nationals starter Patrick Corbin (0-1) gave up two runs and three hits, striking out four, in 1 2/3 innings to take the loss. James Wood hit a solo homer in the fifth inning.

Cubs 8, Giants 4

David Bote, Brennen Davis and Chase Strumpf each homered to help Chicago top San Francisco in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Drew Smyly (1-0) started and pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win. Davis finished with two hits and three RBIs for the Cubs.

Otto Lopez hit a two-run homer in the ninth as the Giants scored four runs in the inning. Starter Logan Webb (0-1) gave up two runs and three hits in two innings to take the loss.

Reds 4, Guardians 0

Seven pitchers combined to throw a shutout and Will Benson and Tyler Callihan each homered combined to throw to help Cincinnati beat Cleveland in Goodyear, Ariz.

Fernando Cruz (1-0) allowed one hit in one scoreless inning to earn the win. Callihan hit a two-run homer in the eighth to give the Reds some breathing room.

Steven Kwan had two of the Guardians' seven hits and Adam Oller (0-1) gave up one run and two hits in two-thirds of an inning to take the loss.

Rockies 5, Athletics 1

Michael Toglia homered and Jimmy Herron drove in two runs to help Colorado beat Oakland in Mesa, Ariz.

Starter Peter Lambert pitched two scoreless innings, allowing two walks, and Jake Bird (1-0) picked up the win after allowing no runs in the sixth.

Esteury Ruiz homered to drive in the only run for the Athletics, who were held to three hits. Danis Correa (0-1) took the loss, giving up two hits and one run in one inning.

White Sox 8, Mariners 7

Edgar Quero hit a pinch-hit, two-run single in the ninth to help Chicago earn a walk-off victory over Seattle in Phoenix.

Korey Lee had two hits, including a seventh-inning homer, and drove in three runs, and Brett Phillips drove in two for the White Sox. Adisyn Coffey (1-0) got the win despite giving up two runs (one earned) in the ninth inning to blow the save.

Samad Taylor hit a solo blast but the Mariners went 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position. Peyton Alford (0-1) gave up two runs, three walks and Quero's clutch single to take the loss.

Royals 5, Rangers 4

River Town hit a tiebreaking, two-run double in the seventh as Kansas City held off Texas in Surprise, Ariz.

Dan Altavilla (1-0) allowed one run, one hit and one walk in the seventh, striking out one, to earn the win. Evan Sisk came in with two on and one out in the ninth but got out of the jam to pick up the save.

Rangers starter Nathan Eovaldi pitched two scoreless innings and Chasen Shreve (0-1) took the loss, giving up three hits and two runs in one inning.

Diamondbacks 6, Rockies 2

Starter Ryne Nelson (1-0) struck out five in two scoreless innings and Jace Peterson drove in two runs as Arizona topped Colorado in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Alek Thomas, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Jose Herrera each drove in one run for the Diamondbacks.

Yanquiel Fernandez hit a solo homer for the Rockies. Starter Noah Davis (0-1) gave up three hits and one run, striking out three, in two innings to take the loss.

Dodgers 7, Angels 7

Tyler Glasnow gave up four hits and one run in 1 2/3 innings in his Dodgers debut in their tie with the Angels in Tempe, Ariz.

Jose Ramos homered and Ryan Ward hit a three-run double in the Dodgers' five-run eighth inning.

Jason Martin hit a two-run homer to highlight the Angels' three-run eighth inning, which tied the score at 7-7.

Brewers 11, Padres 7

Wes Clarke homered twice and drove in three runs and Brock Wilken also added three RBIs to help Milwaukee defeat San Diego in Peoria, Ariz.

Brewers starter Rob Zastryzny (1-0) got the win despite giving up three hits and two runs in one inning.

Kai Murphy drove in two runs and Clay Dungan homered for the Padres. Starter Pedro Avila (0-1) gave up five runs (three earned) and six hits in one inning in the loss.
