Should Cubs Pursue Re-Signing Candelario?
USA TODAY Sports

Third base has been identified as one of the positions that the Chicago Cubs would like to upgrade heading into the 2024 season.

Patrick Wisdom ultimately couldn't be an everyday player there because of his poor defense. Christopher Morel found himself in the same situation. Nick Madrigal was an incredible defender, but struggled at the plate. They traded for Jeimer Candelario at the deadline, but injuries sidelined him down the stretch.

So, what should the Cubs do this offseason when analyzing their situation at the hot corner?

Chicago could be ultra-aggressive and hand out a lot of money to Matt Chapman in the free agency market, but that might not be the best option considering the money they could have to shell out to keep Cody Bellinger.

The free agent they should sign is Candelario.

The Cubs are already familiar with his game and personality, having played for the franchise in 2016, parts of 2017 and now half of 2023.

He brings a good mix of solid defense at third and first base, while having a career slash line of .243/.325/.414 and posting his best power season last year.

Morel is already under contract and could be used in the designated hitter role for the majority of the time, while also working in at third base every so often to see if his defense improves.

Having Candelario on the roster to be a mentor at that position could also help the development of Morel or anyone else that the front office calls up during the year.

He would be a much cheaper option for the Chicago front office than Chapman and might provide greater value in the long term for this franchise.
