Reds' Mike Moustakas heads to 10-day IL with heel contusion

Cincinnati Reds infielder Mike Moustakas attempted to play through the right heel contusion he first suffered last Friday against the Colorado Rockies, but it wasn't to be.

The Reds confirmed Thursday they placed Moustakas on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Wednesday and recalled infielder Max Schrock from Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding roster move.

Moustakas hadn't been in the lineup since first suffering the injury and made only a couple of cameo appearances over the past six days. The 32-year-old three-time All-Star wanted to return to the lineup soon but instead will remain a spectator through next week.

"I was surprised. I was positive based on the feedback I was getting from Moose," manager David Bell told reporters Thursday, according to Mark Sheldon of the MLB website. "I think he just wanted to play so bad. I know he was doing everything he possibly could to get back on the field, to get back in the lineup. But even from Day 1 or Day 2, he made himself available to pinch-hit.

"Every day I would talk to him, he was getting better. [It was] definitely a concern that, by putting him in the games, that I was making it worse. I kept asking that, and he said, 'No.' Finally, they just did another exam, and found a little more damage in there."

Moustakas is batting .241 with four home runs and 13 RBI across 28 games this season.
