Red Sox Reportedly Land Ex-Orioles Catcher To Help Add Organizational Depth
Scott Taetsch-USA TODAY Sports

The Boston Red Sox haven't made a major splash yet this offseason but have been adding around the edges.

Boston has been linked to multiple high-profile players so far in free agency but hasn't been able to get a deal done. The biggest reason for this is the club was waiting on former Orix Buffaloes ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Now that he has signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the free agent market is expected to pick up and the Red Sox likely will be heavily involved.

The Red Sox have plenty of work to do after winning just 78 games last season and likely will make a major move or two. The club also will continue adding depth after a down year and reportedly did just that Friday.

Boston reportedly signed former Baltimore Orioles and Cincinnati Reds catcher Mark Kolozsvary to a minor league deal to bolster organizational depth, according to ESPN's Kiley McDaniel.

"(Catcher) Mark Kolozsvary has signed a minor league deal with the Boston Red Sox, per source," McDaniel said. "Deal comes with a spring training invite. Kolozsvary played in the big leagues with the Reds in 2022 and in AAA with the Orioles and Twins in 2023."

Kolozsvary was selected in the seventh round of the 2017 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft by the Reds. He worked his way up through the organization and eventually made his big league debut with Cincinnati in 2022.

He has mainly spent time in the minors throughout his professional career and spent the 2023 campaign in the Orioles and Minnesota Twins' farm systems. Kolozsvary also appeared in one game at the big league level with the Orioles last season.

Kolozsvary likely won't play much of a role at the big league level with Boston in 2024, but it could never hurt to add more organizational depth.
