Rays 2B Brandon Lowe 'okay' after HBP during rehab game

Tampa Bay Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe has been sidelined since mid-May with a lower back injury, but appeared in his first game on a minor league rehab assignment Thursday night with Triple-A Durham. His first game back did not last long.

On Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reported an update on Lowe's status.

A 2019 All-Star, Lowe had produced a .212/.293/.415 slash line with five home runs and 12 RBIs over 118 at-bats covering 32 games before going on the injured list in May. He produced career highs in nearly every offensive category in 2021, including in home runs (39) and RBIs (99.)

The Rays enter Friday in second place in the AL East with a 45-37 record, but sitting a whopping 14 1/2 games behind the division-leading New York Yankees.
