Pair Of Red Sox Veteran Pitchers Reportedly At Risk Of Being Cut This Offseason

The Boston Red Sox have some tough roster decisions to make in the not-so-distant future.

The Major League Baseball non-tender deadline is set to pass Friday and the Red Sox will have to decide whether or not they want to tender contracts to their arbitration-eligible players. With free agency officially upon us, Boston also will have to decide if it wants to clear any space on its roster for more additions.

Two players who reportedly are at risk of being cut this offseason are veteran pitchers Wyatt Mills and Zack Weiss, according to MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo.

"Anyone with less than three years of service time who (Craig Breslow) doesn’t view as a major league contributor could be at risk," Cotillo said. "Righty Wyatt Mills, who is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, is one candidate to be cut loose after not pitching in 2023. Journeyman reliever Zack Weiss is another. The Red Sox have two open spots on their 40-man roster already."

Mills was traded to the Red Sox ahead of the 2023 campaign but he didn't actually appear in a game for Boston. The 28-year-old dealt with an elbow issue that shelved him to start the year and he eventually underwent Tommy John surgery. Weiss was claimed off waivers by the Red Sox from the Los Angeles Angels during the 2023 campaign and he appeared in six games for Boston and allowed two earned runs in 8 2/3 innings pitched. 

It doesn't appear as though either Mills or Weiss will have a major role with Boston in 2024 so it wouldn't be too surprising to see them let go.
