Padres trade All-Star utility player Adam Frazier to Mariners

The Seattle Mariners acquired utility player Adam Frazier from the San Diego Padres in a trade Saturday that will send relief pitcher Ray Kerr and outfielder Corey Rosier to Southern California, the Mariners announced.

Frazier, 30, played second base and outfield during his time with the Padres and Pittsburgh Pirates. In 2021, Frazier earned his first trip to the All-Star Game and finished the season with a .305 batting average with 176 hits. He was traded to the Padres shortly after the All-Star break.

“Adam is a proven, versatile, well-rounded player,” Mariners president Jerry Dipoto said in a statement. “His presence makes our lineup longer and our team more complete.”

The Mariners have missed the postseason in 20 consecutive seasons, but finished the 2021 campaign with a 90-72 record and were just two games behind the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees for a spot in the AL wild-card game.

Earlier in November, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reported Seattle was "expected to be big spenders" in free agency after coming so close to a berth in the playoffs. The 20-year postseason drought is the longest in MLB and the fifth-longest in the expanded-postseason era.
