Nationals' Starlin Castro placed on administrative leave after alleged domestic violence incident

Major League Baseball is placing Starlin Castro on administrative leave after an alleged domestic violence incident that occurred earlier this summer, according to The Athletic's Brittany Ghiroli.

The leave is for seven days, Ghiroli adds. Castro will still get paid and won't lose service time. His absence could be extended in weeklong increments if MLB and the MLB Players Association agree. 

Ghiroli says it's unclear when the incident took place. Castro was placed on the restricted list one month ago due to what manager Davey Martinez said was a "family matter."

Castro's administrative leave comes after the MLB and MLBPA agreed to extend Trevor Bauer's absence for two weeks as the league and Pasadena Police Department continue to investigate sexual assault allegations against the Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher. 

Castro, 31, faced sexual assault allegations in 2011. However, no charges were filed against him. 

The Dominican Republic native is in his second season with the Washington Nationals after stints with the Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees and Miami Marlins. He's hitting .283 this season with three home runs and 38 RBI. 

It's unclear whom the Nationals plan to use in Castro's role over the next week.
