The Washington Nationals made a slew of roster moves on Tuesday that included designating right-handed reliever Tyler Clippard for assignment. The club also activated right-hand pitcher Erick Fedde from the 15-day injured list. They also optioned catcher Tres Barrera while recalling catcher Riley Adams from Triple-A Rochester.

Clippard, 37, returned to the Nationals this year after seven seasons on a minor league deal. He impressed in 36 appearances at Triple-A Rochester, registering a 2.23 ERA and 1.190 WHIP. He also had a 4-1 record with one save in 40 1/3 innings.

The Nationals called him up in July. But after one appearance out of the bullpen, he landed on the injured list with a groin strain. Now, the feel-good story comes to an end. He made four appearances with Washington, posting a 7.20 ERA.

Fedde returns after being placed on the 15-day injured list on July 30 with inflammation in his right shoulder. He made a rehab start last week with Rochester before rejoining the Nationals’ rotation. In 19 starts this season, Fedde is 5-7 with a 4.95 ERA.

Adams, 26, rejoins the Nationals for his second stint in the majors after making the roster following spring training. He hit .192/.284/.321 with three home runs and five RBI in 27 games before being sent down on July 1.
